Istanbul
More Information
Istanbul is, and has always been, a destination for displaced people of all kinds. Most recently, the political instability in parts of the Middle East (particularly Syria and Iraq) have given Turkey the world’s largest refugee population. Many of these people gravitate to Istanbul, where there are more job opportunities, and the EU border feels within reach. However, many fail to either find jobs (in the current economic environment) or make it to Europe and end up on the streets.
We will be visiting the Fatih district, helping Istanbul & I NGO to cook, prepare and serve dinner among local residents and refugees.

Difficulty Level
Easy, no experience necessary.
Meet Our Local Host
Istanbul&I, among other volunteering and positive impact events, arrange regular food distribution programs. These are focused on the Fatih district, which has become the first destination for Arab refugees, despite being one of Istanbul’s oldest and most historical neighborhoods, arranged around the mosque and tomb of Mehmet the Conqueror (Fatih Mehemt in Turkish, hence the name). Food is prepared in a local restaurant kitchen and volunteers are needed to distribute and serve it among local residents.
