Description
How did the ‘cradle of democracy’ become the ‘basket case of Europe’? The question may be crude and offensive, but it captures the essence of much thinking around the globe in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. This interactive storytelling walk is meant to have the flow and information-heavy experience of a documentary. It takes us into a comprehensive analysis, providing surprising answers. It highlights the social and political elements of Greece, from the creation of the Greek state to modern times. We’ll address both historical and current events from a balanced & non-biased point of view to help you determine your views of this land for yourself. The experience is aimed at people with a genuine social and political interest and those keen to learn more about the situation in Greece by conducting some first-hand research. It combines a visit to the most important institutional spots with Exarcheia, renowned for being Athens’ historical core of radical political activism.
Refugee arrivals to Greece and Europe keep going. The media focuses intensely on the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ but often fails to mention why people have been forced to flee their countries. This walk also seeks to give you the chance to understand and observe first-hand their situation. Furthermore, we will draw parallels between what has happened in the history of Greece and what is currently happening in Syria, Afghanistan, and other countries in the wider region. The idea is to make us realize that none of us are immune to turbulent times and that the refugees of today are escaping real danger. By understanding their situation, we can start to change our attitudes.
